There is a reason that Xi Jinping (China), Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil) did not bother to attend the COP26 in Glasgow in the UK this week.

I have often heard that climate change will effect us all. The UK Climate Change Minster Lord Debden was making exactly this point about the missing heads of state a few days ago.

Often we are told that climate change will and is having dramatically destructive results in China, Russia and Brazil; so these self confessed ultra-nationalists should be interested. But consider that they are all either dictators or would be dictators.

President Xi and his family are insulated from the world and the average Chinese citizen, by a bloated security army, which he has purged of anyone suspected of not being absolutely loyal to him personally. Putin is the same.Bolsonaro has deep links to the Brazilian military, and has advocated for the return of the right wing dictatorship that ended in 1985.

These people are sociopathic liars who welcome chaos as a means of extending their power obsessions. The difference between democracies and dictatorships is that when sociopaths climb to the top in a dictatorship, they get to change the rules to make the tragedy permanent. As seen in China technology is enabling dictator Xi to greater abuses of power.

When these leaders look at climate change, they see opportunity, and they feel cynical.
